A SHORT TRIP TO JESENÍK

Aktualisiert: 8. März 2020

Okay, you got me, technically the town of Jeseník is not part of the okres Šumperk but there are several reasons why I still decided to show you a glimpse of it.

First of all the Jeseník mountains are very important for the whole region regardless of the town.

Second of all I really wanted to go there ever since I started to do research for this blog.

Third of all I was very lucky that I got the opportunity to go to Jeseník anyway because my organisation was part of an event there and I got some time to explore the town.

We only had a few hours in Jeseník and wanted to make the most of our time so we went to the tourist information center. The employees there were incredibly nice and really helped us out. Even if you are not short on time I recommend you pay them a visit.

JESENÍK AND THE CHOCOLATE MANUFACTURE

One of our first stops was the XOCOLÃTL chocolate manufacture. This place will make you see chocolate in a different way! Their goal was to create new traditions and to show people what it means to love your craft. The cocoa beans are imported from all over the world and come together in the small czech town of Jeseník to enhance their flavour with czech goods and craftsmanship. Chocolate and love have been going hand in hand ever since their creation so it is no wonder that this process reminds me a little of finding love in another country. You leave your home and bring its essence with you to a new country where it comes in contact with a totally different one. That's also how this manufacture works. The best parts are combined without losing the initial taste in order to create something new. Every single piece of chocolate is handmade and unique.

We tried some of the chocolate and every bite was an explosion of taste in my mouth. Things like herbs and chilli were combined with cocoa beans - things that sound like they should not be together but they go so incredibly well together.

In general they have a very wide variety of products ranging from chocolate covered fruits and coffee beans over spreads to chocolate beer. They have everything your chocolate-loving heart desires.

WHAT YOU CAN'T MISS

Like in a lot of czech towns you can find a castle in Jeseník but this one is even more special than anticipated. It's actually a water castle that was built centuries ago. Besides being fascinating to look at the castle actually hides even more behind his thick walls. It offers different exhibitions on various topics. You can learn more about the local history and geography or learn more about the witch trials in the Jeseník region. It's a sight to see and definitely something you should consider visiting even if you don't actually go to the museum.

Another sight that you can definitely not afford to miss is the main square. It's the city centre and something you should always visit no matter what town you go to. If you ask me it's worth a visit for the sole reason that the town hall building looks like a face. It's very charming and makes the whole place even more inviting. You can find a few shops, restaurants and cafes at the square. I bet that the square is teeming with people as soon as the temperatures go up.

RELAX, TAKE IT EASY

One of the reasons why thousands of people visit Jeseník every year is because it is known as a spa town. And the man who is the reason for the towns fame is Vincent Priessnitz. He was a simple young man who was born into a farmers family in Lázně Jeseník. He was fascinated by the healing powers of water after he saw a stag who treated his wounds at a stream. Vincent himself experienced its benefits several times. When Priessnitz broke his rips the doctors declared his case to be fatal or crippling the least but he proved them wrong. After applying cold, wet bandages and drinking large amounts of water for a longer period of time his injuries were healed. Even though a lot of doctors were not happy with his practice after he opened his spa and tried to discredit his work for not being based on actual science he kept going and treated countless people in Jeseník. To this day he is known as the founder of modern hydrotherapy.

Even if you don't come to the spa town to treat yourself there still is a lot to do and see. There are several hiking trails and other attractions like the Balneopark. Just walking around the town, breathing in the fresh air and admiring the architecture of the various buildings is a treat itself! You can even visit Priessnitz's spa and soak in the history without staying there. There are also various restaurants and cafes and as an Austrian I should recommend the Wiener Kaffeehaus restaurant but since I didn't have enough time to actually visit it I am not guaranteeing an authentic Viennese experience. However it was fun to see a piece of home in the czech mountains.

WHEN THE HUNGER HITS

Jeseník did not come to play when it comes to its restaurants and bistros. Here are a few recommendations I have for you if you decide to visit the town but also feel free to discover it on your own.

The first recommendation I have is a cafe in the spa town of Jesenik also known as Lázně Jeseník that is called Vinckovo. It's a unique cafe in a unique place - the family house of the Priessnitzs. They bake their own delicious cakes that range from sugarfree and vegan to sugary and sweet! They also serve healthy food and snacks. I really loved the atmosphere of this place! It was cozy and I couldn't keep my eyes off the different artworks that were scattered around the place. They also have regular open mics and musical guests which I personally think is awesome! I would love to visit this place and listen to music in this unique atmosphere.

The second place I can recommend is called Ennea Caffé and is close to the center of the town. It is located in the historically best preserved part of the town, in a house built in 1835. Try some of their freshly roasted coffee from Czech roasters! Local pastry makers prepare fresh desserts and cakes daily. If you prefer something savory I recommend their homemade bread rolls and sandwiches. The cafe has a charming atmosphere and once you go you won't want to leave!

THOUGHTS

The town of Jeseník is very special and definitely deserves even more coverage than I was able to give it. Take your time when you come here, relax and enjoy the various facets of the town. You can go there for a day or better yet book yourself a room in one of the incredible spa hotels and just unwind. I am really glad that I got to see a little bit of this town. There is so much more to it than I was able to show you today. I also want to note that almost all of the places I mentioned in this post are part of the Jeseníky brand! This amazing brand guarantees not only the local origin of the product and its link to the Jeseníky region, but also its quality and environmental friendliness. Go check it out to find incredible products, places and experiences!
